009.08 | This Abbey was founded for a section of the Benedictine Monks, by King David the 1st. of Scotland in the 12th Century, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and St. John the Evangelist. The Abbey buildings were on the S. [South] side of the Church, and are all demolished and removed. |

009.08 | All that exists now are the remains of the Church. Founded in 1128, & is considered a good specimen of Norman Architecture. The great thickness of the walls enabled it to withstand the frequent burnings to which it was subjected, by the English, but in the year 1545 it was battered down with Cannon and reduced to its present state, by the celebrated Earl of Hertford.
