plan of Kelso 1852
Mr. Broomfield
010.01 On the east side of the Town, and Consists of a large grass field surrounded by a gravel Walk and a row of young Trees between the Walk and boundary hedge. A central portion is carefully levelled and rolled for cricketing, and rustic sports of all Kinds are celebrated in the park annually. During the Summer Months it answers the purpose of a village green. In a few years its appearance will be improved by the growth of the young trees. It makes an excellent parade ground for the Militia or other troops sometimes stationed in Kelso. The park is part of some fields formerly called the short whings or whangs, in which the shoemakers' Society of the Town had some proprietorship or interest. The Long whings (or whangs) are some long fields on the east side of the park; one of them is now being converted into a nursery. Whangs need not be written on the plan.
