009.04 A close of inferior houses off the north side of Roxburgh street. The house on the west side of the passage was built some few years ago by one Mr. Gray a mason, and over the doorway he built in a large stone on which is cut a coat of arms surrounded by a pious motto and the date 16--. This stone was obtained from an old building near the square. Judging by the style of the mouldings it is from an old ruin in Elliott's close or court off the horse market, but no historical information has been obtained about the ruin.
COBLE HOLE Coble Hole Robert Darling Esq. Broomlands
Mr. James Bowhill Kelso
Mr. Walter Stevenson
Mr. Thomas Noble
009.04 A salmon cast in the Tweed at the western extremity of the town, where before the erection of the present Teviot Bridge, a ferry existed and where the boats lay secure - hence the name. The name now applies to the river both above & below the old ferry.
