An ancient Stone Cross Stood here - about thirty years ago it was removed (by the authorities of the Town) to the East end of the Townfoot Bridge where it remained for about twenty eight years - it was again removed (by directions of Lord Campbell) to Hartrigge House, where it now stands. There are no historical accounts in connection with its origin. Tradition has it (and it is the general received opinion) that the Stone was erected on the Site of an ancient Catholic Chapel - the Stone is about three feet long and about sixteen inches in diameter. |

An old "Keep" or "Tower" Stood on the Summit of Stone Hill, its foundation was removed about Seven years ago by Mr. Henderson, gardener for Lord Campbell - the walls were from Six to Seven feet in thickness. History is silent respecting its origin. It is supposed to have belonged to the Kers of Fernieherst. It may be mentioned that Mr. Henderson, Gardener, turned up an Anglo-Saxon coin near its site - the coin is supposed to be a Styca of Oswald King of Northumberland, whose reign began in 849. Near the Same spot a number of the coins of the Heptarchic period have been found. |

and again in 1464, it was placed in the same position by the Earl of Warwick. There are several markets and fairs held in the town during the year. A weekly market is held every Tuesday, and during the winter a cattle market is held on the third Thursday of each month. The Rude day fair for horses and nolt is held on the 25th September. The trade of the town is at the present time in a state of moderate prosperity. It contains a population of about 3000 souls. For further particulars connected with the town See Historical Accounts. |

It appears to me that the definition of the Royalty Boundary
in the Ordnance maps if ever it was more capable of being
defined than it is, would serve no practical public purpose as it
is now never recognised in Parliamentary Royal Burghs such
as this the Parlimentary boundary invariably being taken

aware that since 1832 when the Parlimentary Burgh was
defined that the Royalty Boundary has been recognised

Sheriff Clerk's Office
Jedburgh 20 Decemr [December] 1858
Sir
The sheriff has received your form of 16th Dec. enclosing
Mr. Hilson's letter of the 11th in regard to the Boundaries of
the Burgh of Jedburgh.
Since the date of Mr. Hilson's letter, I have had an op-
-portunity of speaking to him on this subject; and, I quite agree
with him in thinking there would be much difficulty, perhaps
impossibility, in defining the ancient boundaries, as given in the
Town's Charter, for the reasons stated by him. This, however, appears
to one to be of little consequence, for, under a recent Statute, the
Sheriff has extended the Burgh boundaries, for all municipal
purposes, and has so minutely described them that there can be
no difficulty in laying them down on the Plans. The Parliamentary
boundaries, which included around them those of the Burgh proper, are
equally distinct.
What I would propose (and I am sure the Sheriff will
approve) is that that both the Parliamentary, and the recent Burgh
Boundaries should be laid down on the Plans - and this, I think,

would be enough for all useful purposes. If, however, from
an antiquarian feeling, it be wished to lay down the ancient
meiths and marches, probably Mr. Hilson will lend his aid to
get that as accurately done as circumstances will permit.
None of the Sheriff Court authorities here have any knowledge on
the subject.
In place of troubling the Sheriff, in this matter. I have
taken upon me to answer your letter, wishing to save him
labour - and I shall be very glad to lend my assistance in
any way you may think useful

Sir
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the
20th. Decr. [December] & to thank you for the trouble you have taken
concerning the Boundaries of the Burgh of Jedburgh.
I think it most desirable to put this Boundary down on
the Ordnance Plans not as of any practical utility but as
a record of the Boundaries of the Ancient Burgh and your
assistance in doing so will be most acceptable.
The modern Municipal and Burgh Boundaries will
also be inserted as also will the Parliamentary Boundary
I shall be obliged by your further communicating with me

Jedburgh Abbey is Supposed to have been founded, in 1165, by David, although doubts exist on this point. The order of monks was imported from the Abbey of St. Quentin, at Beauvais, in France. Of the history of the Abbey, little that is definite is Known. In most of the frays in which the town was Concerned, the sacred edifice had its Share of injury and assault, Several times it was burned and pillaged, and the Canons Compelled to seek protection in religious houses in England and Scotland. From this Cause, its Chartularies and documents perished. A belief has prevailed that the Abbey covered a much

larger portion of ground than the present building indicates, The Tower, with its battlemented summit gives the building a noble effect. The height of this part is more than 100 feet. There are some curious traditions as to the fate of the Abbey bells. A popular one was, that they were lost in the Tweed opposite Kelso, in the attempt made to ferry them across. Another tradition is that they were carried off to Hexham, and fitted up to adorn the Cathedral there, The north transept remains in a pretty perfect state. It is retained as the burial place of the Lothian family, within it are deposited many of the Chiefs of the house of Ker. A part of the lane is fitted up as the Parish Church.

Of the origin of Jedburgh Castle, nothing is known. It is mentioned by early annalists, and it is not improbable that its existence would date from the period of the distinction of the two Kingdoms. As a place of Strength, it stood first amongst the Border Castles. In early times, the Castle was a favourite residence of the Scottish Kings, within its walls occurred an incident which has been dwelt upon by all the Scottish annalists. During the festivities on the occasion of the marriage of Alexander III, a Skeleton or Spectre made its appearance, which filled the guests with dismay, and gave Evil portent of the calamity which in a few days after deprived Scotland of its King, and opened up the way
