021.05 | [Situation] At the Jail. Of the origin of Jedburgh Castle, nothing is known. It is mentioned by early annalists, and it is not improbable that its existence would date from the period of the distinction of the two Kingdoms. As a place of Strength, it stood first amongst the Border Castles. In early times, the Castle was a favourite residence of the Scottish Kings, within its walls occurred an incident which has been dwelt upon by all the Scottish annalists. During the festivities on the occasion of the marriage of Alexander III, a Skeleton or Spectre made its appearance, which filled the guests with dismay, and gave Evil portent of the calamity which in a few days after deprived Scotland of its King, and opened up the way [Continued on page 78] |
