The sheriff has received your form of 16th Dec. enclosing
Mr. Hilson's letter of the 11th in regard to the Boundaries of
the Burgh of Jedburgh.
Since the date of Mr. Hilson's letter, I have had an op-
-portunity of speaking to him on this subject; and, I quite agree
with him in thinking there would be much difficulty, perhaps
impossibility, in defining the ancient boundaries, as given in the
Town's Charter, for the reasons stated by him. This, however, appears
to one to be of little consequence, for, under a recent Statute, the
Sheriff has extended the Burgh boundaries, for all municipal
purposes, and has so minutely described them that there can be
no difficulty in laying them down on the Plans. The Parliamentary
boundaries, which included around them those of the Burgh proper, are
equally distinct.
What I would propose (and I am sure the Sheriff will
approve) is that that both the Parliamentary, and the recent Burgh
Boundaries should be laid down on the Plans - and this, I think,
