021.05 | [Situation] About 1 1/2 chains South of St. Mary's Chapel. An ancient Stone Cross Stood here - about thirty years ago it was removed (by the authorities of the Town) to the East end of the Townfoot Bridge where it remained for about twenty eight years - it was again removed (by directions of Lord Campbell) to Hartrigge House, where it now stands. There are no historical accounts in connection with its origin. Tradition has it (and it is the general received opinion) that the Stone was erected on the Site of an ancient Catholic Chapel - the Stone is about three feet long and about sixteen inches in diameter. |
