The foundation stones of this ancient Chapel are still visible - situate in an arable field on the left bank of the Jed, the grave-yard is enclosed by an old fence, surrounded with ash trees - on the property of the Marquis of Lothian.
This is the site of a Chapel, which Chalmers states, was built by Ecgred, Bishop of Lindisfarne who died A.D. 845; and he called it Gedworth, & it was in the middle of a vast forest - Jeffreys Antiquities. |
