015.07 | The parish of Eckford derives its name from a passage of the River Teviot. i.e. Eck-ford - being merely the Oak Ford, from the AEc. quercus of Somner : and the AEc is still pronounced Aik, or Ec, in the dialects of Scotland and of England." - Chalmers Caledonia Vol:II P.166 The name of this parish is a Compound of aec, an oak, and Ford a passage over a river, - referring to the oaks which anciently prevailed in the district, and to a Ford in the Teviot, within a short distance of the Village, which bears the name of the Parish.
