016.13 The remains of a stronghold, which would seem to have been a place of considerable note. The precise period of its erection is unknown. The first proprietor of the castle mentioned in history was Andrew Ker of Altonburn, to whom the barony of Cessford was granted in 1446. The remains of the castle exhibit an average thickness of wall from 12 to 13 feet, and the main building is 70 feet high; but the roof is entirely gone, and little now remains of its former dimensions. The area within the walls is 42 feet long by 22 broad. Dawson's Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account].
