015.08 | This name applies to the site of an ancient tower, reported to have been once the residence of Hepburn Earl of Bothwell A few stones level with the surface are all that now remains to mark the site. It was originally surrounded by a marsh and only accesible at one point by a causeway. It was destroyed by a party of English on the 30th of June 1523, headed by Thomas Lord Dacre, after which it was rebuilt, and again destroyed by the Earl of Sussex in 1570. |
