045.04 | [Situation] On the East bank of Liddle Water. This is the site of Liddel Castle supposed to have been occupied by the Soulises, before they removed to Hermitage Castle; the latter is supposed to have been built in the middle of the 13th century; & the former was allowed to decay after that period, but there are no remains of it at present visible. The natural and artificial defences that surrounded it are still entire; on the west there is a rocky precipice about 100 feet high, on the north a rugged steep, on the east a deep & rugged ravine & on the south a double fosse with a rampart 30 feet high. See Chalmer's Caledonia. etc. |
