A large elevated ridge of great Amplitude, forming a remarkable feature on the Eastern Side of a Small farm from which it takes the name of Whitrope. Made several inquiries respecting the proper etemology of this name and could not obtain no further acct. [account] than this being the mode of the district Whiteharehope seems to be the original but contracted to Whitrope. Whitter Hope - A place of meeting of the Border Rievers, where this view of Liddesdale & Teviotdale regaled themselves before & after a forray and the English Border - probably hearty draughts of liquor formed their chief refreshment. |
