077 | On 77/11 Trace 6, there are two Tumuli, one of which, situated about 14 chains N [North] of the farmhouse of Woodhead, contains a chamber, formed of large unhewn stones, which was exposed by the removal of the superincumbent stones, about the year 1817, for the purpose of building the adjacent farmhouse. It is about 11 ft. [feet] 4 inches, in length, 5 ft. [feet] 3 in [inches] in breadth, depth uncertain, (as it is partly filled up with stones &c.) A covered passage has led from the western side to the chamber, another similar one branches off from the S.E [South East] corner. Mr D. Cameron, Badgrinann who was born near the spot has furnished the above information. and nothing further, seems to be known locally, concerning the subject, except continued in page 61 |
