Parish of Avoch ------- Sir
The greatest length of the parish of Avoch, in a straight
line from the coast of the Moray Frith [Firth] to the Folds of ------- Written & described
Auchterflow, is 4 1/4 miles; its greatest breadth along its northern
boundary, 3 miles. This extent may be strictly said to form a
portion of the southern side of one great hill, called the Milbuy ------- Written Mullbuie
Maol Buidh (yellow headland) which, although only about
500 feet high extends from the Muir of Ord to the town of Cromarty.
The extent of the coast along the Moray Frith [Firth], from the Craigland ------- shewn
Burn to the Bay of Munlochy or Munlochy Bay ------- Written Munlochy
The tide recedes one fourth of a mile opposite the village of ------- Bay shewn
Avoch. As the tide comes through the Pentland Frith, they
are always raised by a Westerly, and depressed by an easterly
wind. The whole of the parish, with the exception of the south
side of the second ridge, called Tourie Lum is well supplied ------- not known by this
with excellent water from perennial springs. There are two on ------- name, written Tourie
the north side of the village of peculiarly excellent quality, ------- Hill
Hainuck and Charles's. But the one of great celebrity is ------- shewn
Craiguck, on the estate of Bennetsfield, which is annually ------- shewn
resorted to by numbers of invalids. The Burn of Avoch which ------- written Avoch Burn
rises principally in this parish, and proves so essentially ser-
viceable to 4 miles, - after winding beautifully through the
estates of Rosehaugh and Avoch discharges its waters ------- written & described
into the Frith [Firth] at Henrietta Bridge close to the village ------- written & described
Near to the source is a beautiful pool, called Littlemilstick ------- no information could be got refairing this
stated as the pool in which, in times past Baptists were ------- pool
immersed. The only piece of fresh water is Scadden's Loch ------- not known
which covers fourteen imperial acres.
1st Ridge, Omondy Hill, or the Lady's Hill of Avoch and ------- written Ormond
Castleton Hill, continued on the south side of Munlochy Bay ------- Hill & Wood Hill
by the hills of Craigiehow, Pillundy, and the Ord of Kessock,
where the ridge is interrupted by the sea.
2nd Ridge. Hill from which the stones for the garrison of
Fort.
