The ruins of an old castle the date of the erection of which is not exactly known there is now only a part of the Southern wall remaining about 20 feet in height, and a small portion of the base of the side walls, it stands on a rock which is surrounded by water at full tides. It is supposed to have been destroyed ay the time of the Commonwealth by some of Cromwell's adherents, and after wards sufficiently restored to become habitable by the McLeods who are known to have been its latest possessors |

The old Castle was the residence of
the Macleods of Lewis who possessed the
whole Island for three hundred years
the last of that name was Rory McLeod
or old Rory as he was usually named
died during the minority of James the
Sixth of Scotland when the whole Island
was ceded by the then Government to Three
members of the Privy Council viz
Lord Balmarine These others who took

The Inhabitants who were at that period

the traditional history of that period
as handed down to us assents that the
natural sons of Old Rory attempted
to settle in the Castle from which they
were expelled by the Fife Settlers and

fifty Ponds of our Sterling money and it has

Dear Sir,
You have the only accounts
of the Castle and its demolition that
I could glean from the Old natives as
handed down from Genration to Generation
and which accords with a statement I per

chronicle published in the early part of the

A substantial stone building, nearly the largest edifice and apparently the best piece of architecture in the town, it is on a very commanding position which from some distance especially towards the harbour has good effect, the erection of it was commenced in 1844 and finished in 1846. It is divided into two parts, the Prison and the Court house. The Prison was complete at the expense of the County and the other part at th expense of Mr Matheson. the whole is estimated to have cost £1800. It is capable to contain 60 prisoners. |
