027 | [Situation] In Stornoway on the South side of the point where the present Quay is erected for landing and shipment of goods. The ruins of an old castle the date of the erection of which is not exactly known there is now only a part of the Southern wall remaining about 20 feet in height, and a small portion of the base of the side walls, it stands on a rock which is surrounded by water at full tides. It is supposed to have been destroyed ay the time of the Commonwealth by some of Cromwell's adherents, and after wards sufficiently restored to become habitable by the McLeods who are known to have been its latest possessors |
