017 A long narrow channel, extending from East to West. It is about a mile in length and its greatest breadth is about 1/4 of a mile, it is one of the safest and most excellent harbours on this shore, and indeed it is the only harbourage from Scarp Island to Stornoway, it affords every facility for anchorage, and is resorted to by all the cod and ling fishing vessels, in case of storms being at sea, as they can go in and out of it with any wind, the prevailing winds in it are North, North West, and South, and the rise and fall of tides are from 10 to 14 feet.
