[Situation] Near the Sea Coast in the N.W. [North West] section of the plan, 30 chains N. [North] of Siadeir Uachdrach village.
A small village, on the left of the road from Stornoway to Ness; about 16 miles from the former, and about 11 miles from the latter. It contains about 27 families who derive their chief support from the produce of the land, which is tolerably good. The houses are built of peat-moss, and lined with stone, and thatched. This village has been larger than it is at present, some of the people having emigrated; others have removed to a new portion lately reclaimed. There is very little fishing carried on here, the coast being very rough. |

An old burying place with the site of a place of worship. It is upwards of a hundred years, since any one was buried here, except a sailor who was Cast ashore, about 40 years ago. The site of the church is pointed out by the natives who reside in the locality. It is not more than 40 years since the gable ends were standing. There are no traditionary stories regarding either church or grave yard, nor can any further information be collected, respecting its Antiquity. It would appear from Pheadair (Peter) that the church was dedicated to Saint Peter. Signifies Peter's Temple |

[Situation] On the Western margins of the
plan 90 chains S.W [South West] by West of Siadeir Iorach village.
A standing stone, nineteen feet above ground, and about three feet square at its base, It is supposed, that there are no less than 12 feet of it Sunk in the ground, which, if true, renders it the longest standing stone in the Lewis. The traditions regarding it are vague and uncertain. Some parties maintain, owing to the resemblance to those at Callanish, that it is a Druidical Erection. Others believe it to have been erected by the Danes, to mark the site of one of their victories.

[Situation] In the western side of the plan on the road from Stornoway to Ness. 15 miles from the former place.
A large village, consisting of two small ones, viz Sheadair Uachhdrach, and Sheadair Iochdrach. The houses are built of sods lined with stone, and thatched. The greater part of them are very rudely constructed. It contains upwards of 60 small tenants. The soil is considered tolerably good. It is situated about 15 miles from Stornoway on both sides of the road to Ness, and is more than a mile in length. Peghinnean signifies a certain measure or extent of land, used throughout the island. In former times Seadair contained seven of these: - hence Seachd Peghinnean. |

This is an old burying place with the Site of a place of worship, There are upwards of a hundred years Since any was buried in it except a Sailor who was cast a Shore here about 40 years ago There is a tale of an old woman of Shadir who was Spinning black wool in one of the houses near the Grave yard. it is Said that a woman rose out of the Grave and entered the house when the old woman was Spinning the black wool. without Speaking a word to any of the inmates She attacked the poor old woman and cut off one of her fingers with her teeth. This unwelcome visit of the dead was attributed by the people to the black wool Long after this there was no blacK wool Spun in the night time in the village without having a Small tuft of white wool tied on the top of the distaff Turn over [continued on page 53] |
