005 [situation] Lies on the western side of the road from Stornoway to Ness 18 miles from the former, and 9 miles from the latter plan.
A large and populous village on the left of the road from Stornoway to Ness. It extends about a mile and a half, from the 17 mile stone, and is composed of four Smaller ones, viz. Borgh Mòr, Bail Ard, Bor[gh] Mheadhonach, and Mealabost. The houses are built of sods and thatched with straw. Owing to the roughness and shallowness of the adjacent Coast, it is almost impossible to fish, except in the Summer Season, So that the people for the most part have to rely on the produce of the land for their support.
