003 | A village of huts built of stone and clay, and thatched with straw. It is the most northerly village in Lewis, and situated in a patch of good arable land which is very much injured by the sand being blown over it from the shore on windy days. These huts are perhaps the most wretched in Lewis, they are like the others filled with dung for nine months of the year, And during the other three, they are often filled with the Sand which is sometimes blown about them so densely as to resemble a thick fog when seen at a distance. |
