A well known manufacturing town in Renfrewshire. And the most important in the West of Scotland, save Glasgow. Situated About seven miles from the latter place and three from Renfrew, And is the head town of the Shire.
Previous to the last Census Paisley ranked as the third town in Scotland as regards population, but it now only ranks as the fifth, - population over 60,000 . - It was created into a free Burgh of Barony in 1490 by Abbot Shaw, the then Abbot of Paisley. It is a parliamentary Burgh, divided into 5 Municipal Wards, and returned one Member to Parliament; The governing Body of the burgh are a Provost, four Bailies, 10 Councillors, a Treasurer, two Town Clerks, a Chamberlain and twenty eight Commissioned of Police. The Ancient part of the town is built upon one of those gently swelling heights so generally to be met with in Renfrewshire, and which imparts to it a pleasing and Airy aspect. Several of the streets are quite modern, have a neat Appearance, Abound in good and even elegant Shops, And exhibit a good display of Public buildings, Some of which are in no way inferior to any of the provincial public buildings.-
Till the year 1736 Paisley formed one Parish and Contained only one Church, namely the Abbey, which however has had the benefit of two Ministers since 1641. In 1736 the Burgh was erected into a Separate Parish and a Church was built for it. In 1756 Another place of Worship was built in the Burgh, this from its being raised on the most elevated part of the town, was distinguished by the name of the High Church. |

while the former erection from the relative Situation was denominated the Low Church, In 1781 a third
Church, from its situation called the Middle Church, was added, And the Burgh, which till that time had continued one Parish
was, by a decree of the Court of Teinds, divided into three, called the Low Church Parish, Middle Church Parish, and High
Church Parish respectively,____ In 1819 the Minister of the Low Church was transferred to a more Spacious edifice, namely, St
George's Church, and the latter Continued to be the Church of the Low Church Parish, while the former is no longer in connexion with |

the establishment, A Detached portion of the Low Church parish is Situated within the Abbey Parish, on the East side of the River
Cart and Opposite to the Seedhill Craigs, And a small detached portion of the Abbey Parish is Situated within the detached part of the
Low Church Parish, east of and Adjacent to the Seedhill Shawl factory ___________
In addition to the Parish Churches there are four Quoad Sacra Churches, Six Free Churches, six U.P. Churches, one R.P.
Church, two Baptist Chapels, one Unitarian, one Episcopal and one Roman Catholic Chapel, two Independents, one Wesleyan Methodist, and
One Evangelical Union Chapel, in the town. There are also Five Branch Banks, 26 Schools, a Public Library, Atheneum, Artizan's Institute
And a Magnificent Reading Room which is thrown open to Strangers, Four Hotels And the usual number of Inns [&] Taverns that are to be
met with in Similar large towns, there are also three Weekly newspapers Published in the town. _______________
Paisley is a Well Known Seat of very important manufacture. Chiefly in the Department of Harness, Shawls, Ladies Dresses
and Sewing thread, for the manufacture and finish of the former, it cannot be excelled by any town in Great Britain In Addition to the Several
Shawl Factories and Shawl finishing Works that are in the town, there are also Several Thread Factories, Weaving Factories, Dye Works, Print Works
Starch Works, Tannaries, Foundries, and a Very extensive Brewery and Distillery, all of which necessarily employ a large number of Operatives,
There is a Weekly Market which is held on thursdays, and four Annual fairs. __________
We are indebted for the following ingenious observations on the etymology of the word Paisley, as well as that of
" various Places situated in the Parish, to William Kerr Esq Surgeon Paisley, " At Paisley the Romans had a Station or town, which Antiquarians regard as
" the [Vanduaria of Ptolemy], the most Probable Conjecture concerning the etymology of this name is given by Chalmers, who believed it to be the the Latinized form
" of the British words [Ven dur], or White Water, Applied by the natives to the River White Cart, which flowed Past the Eastern Wall of the Camp.
"The Romans entered Scotland in the year 80 And left it in the year 446, Vanduaria must, therefore, have flourished at the Same Period between " " these years, After the retreat of the Roman forces, the name was lost, and no Place connected with its Site is found in history, till the middle of " " the twelfth Century, when lands on the bank of the River opposite to the Camp are mentioned under the names of Passeleth, Passelay and Passelet |

" The earliest mode of Spelling is Passeleth, and is found in a Charter, granted by David I. In the next Century Paisley Occurs in one Paper as
" Passeleht. The terminations in let and lay occur most frequently, and Seem to have been used indifferently till the middle of the 16th
" Century, When the Orthography commonly employed became Paslay. Chalmers mentioned two etymologies of the name, the first Pasgel_laith
" Which in the Ancient British, Signified moist ground, the second Baslech in the British and Bas_leac in the Gaelic, which signify "the
"flat stone Shoal, Supposed to have been Applied to a ledge of Rock which runs across the Channel of the River White Cart, * * * * *
" Near the Centre of the parish on a bold Terrace - like ridge, rises the town of Paisley, much of it is built on that ridge, and on
" one of a Similar description which runs Parallel on the South, The Surface Occupied by what is properly called the Old town or the Burgh of
"Paisley, is About a mile Square, but in Speaking of Paisley, we must include its Populous Suburbs in the Abbey Parish, especially those now within
" the Parliamentary Burgh, which is Spread over a Surface of About three miles by five and one half, and Contains About Six Square Miles, including "a Small portion of the Parish of Renfrew, * * * * The town of Paisley is in form a burgh of Barony, the lands now Constituting the Burgh were,
" Previous to the erection thereof, held by the Abbot and Convent of the Monastery of Paisley, of the Order of Cluny, in libera regalitate, Four "Charters of date 13th January 1851 Conferring Numerious Privileges, granted by James II, " Monasterio de Pasleto," are to be found on record, In "the first year of the reign of King James IV, the Burgh, formerly a regality, was erected into a free Burgh of Barony, the Privileges contained in the " Charter Were granted to the inhabitants; but the lordship of erection, including the Power of Appointing a Provost, bailies and other office "bearers, Was given to the Abbot and his Successors, * * * On the 2nd June 1490 a feu Charter and Confirmation, with and extensive "enumeration of Privileges, was granted by the Abbot and Convent, in favour of the Provost, bailies, burgesses and Community of the Burgh, In the "tenth year of his reign and on the 3rd January 1576. King James IV granted to the Burgh, a Charter which appears to be the foundation of the "right of Patronage in the Burgh first exercised by the Abercorn & Dundonald families, And Afterwards Acquired by the Magistrates and Council from " Lord Dundonald in 1731, ___ it may in general be observed, that the Burgh of Paisley, though in form a burgh of barony, is Vested with "Privileges of a very extensive Kind, its burgesses have Powers to elect Annually a Provost, bailies, and other Office bearers , to receive resignation "of burgage lands, And give Seizin thereof; to hold fairs and Weekly Markets; to decide in Civil Cases to any extent to judge in Services of heirs; to "issue Acts of Warding for debts Constituted in their Courts, and in Short, to exercise every Privilege of a Royal Burgh, including even that of "electing a Commissioner to Serve in Parliament, ______ * * * * * |

"The town of Paisley is at this day the third in Scotland in regards to Size and Population, its houses with those of its Suburbs, are spread
"over a tract of ground, About 2½ Miles Square, Perhaps the most Spacious an regularly built Street in Paisley is George Street, but in point
"of elegance of buildings, none can equal Forbes Place, * * * The town of Paisley upon the whole, Although well built cannot cope in
"elegance with Some of the larger towns of Scotland, of late years, however, its appearance has been greatly improved by Several low thatched "houses having given Way to neat and Substantial tenements. * * * * From the increase of Population in the Parish (Abbey) Particularly
"in the town, an Additional Church became necessary, and Accordingly in 1736 the Burgh was erected into a Separate Parish by a Decreet of the
" Lord Commissioners for the Plantation of Churches, At the Same time a Charter was Obtained from Lord Dundonald, the Patron of the Parish,
"granting liberty to the Magistrates and Community to build Within the Burgh, a Church or Churches, of which the Patronage was to be vested in "the Magistrates and town Council, In Consequence of the Arrangement they entered into, a Church was erected in 1736 as the Parish Church of
"the Burgh of Paisley, From the Confirmed increase of the Population, additional Church Accommodation became again necessary, And in the year "1756. Another Place of Worship was erected, being built on the height called Oakshawhead, the highest part of the town, it was distinguished by "the name of the High Church, and the former erection from its relative Situation, was denominated the Laigh Kirk or Low Church In the Space of "other 25 years, the Population still rapidly increasing, it was found necessary to add a third Church, to the two already in existance, And "Accordingly this was done in 1781, by its erection near to the site of the High Church; And this Place of Worship, from its relative Situation, "received the name of the Middle Church; The Burgh of Paisley, which till the erection of this third Church, had Continued one Parish, Was on the "20th February of that year (1781) by a deed of the Court of Teinds divided into three Parishes, Called each from its Particular Church, the Low "Church Parish, the High Church Parish, And the middle Church Parish, The Patronage of these Churches belong to the Magistrates and town "Council, The Original Stipend allocated to the Minister of the Burgh of Paisley was 1000 Merks Scots, With an Allowance in lieu of a Manse and "Glebe, This, as Well as the Stipends of the Other two Ministers, has been Several times Augmented, And now the Stipend of each is £300 [per] "Annum, Communion elements being Provided by the Council and Kirk Session; The Stipends are Paid out of the Teinds or Common goods of the Burgh, ______________

Takes its rise in the Parish of Eaglesham, and After Passing through the Parish of East Kilbride, flows in a gently Winding Course through the Parishes of Mearns, Carmunnock & Eastwood, to the Town of Paisley, whence After forming a beautiful & Picturesque Waterfall a little Above the Abbey Bridge, at the Seedhill Craigs, and bending round to the northward, it pursues its course towards the Clyde, and empties itself into that River a few hundred yards West of the town of Renfrew; Below the town of Paisley the river exhibits very little beauty, but Above it, much, its banks being frequently elevated, and clothed with rich drapery of Wood, It is navigable to Paisley. (the Tide flowing up to the Abbey Bridge) and Capable of Admitting vessels of from 60 to 80 Tons burden, its bed from Paisley to its Confluence With the Clyde is generally Rocky.__ |

Clothing , and Outfitting, and if need be, the maintaining of Boys who have resided within the Parliamentary Boundary of Paisley for at least three years, and whose Parents have died either without leaving Sufficient funds for that Purpose, or who from misfortune have been reduced or who from want of means are unable to give a Suitable education to their Children." The Institution is under the Sole management and direction of the Trustees, who have thrown it open to the general Public in Payment of fees, forming as it were an Amalgamation of the Boys on the funds with those paying fees, thus not only are the latter used as a lever power to elevate the former in the Scale of Society, but also the fees chargeable from the pupils not on the funds enable the Trustees to Secure efficient and first Class teachers, as well as to give Burseries to the boys on the funds at the Annual examinations; there is another feature in Connection with this Institution and which is Worthy of notice, the Children Attending the School do not Know who is or who is not upon the funds, this fact is Known only to the trustees and the Parents and guardians of the Children So admitted, and the teachers; the Parents being Allowed the Privilege to fix the Colour and Style of the Pupils dress; thus the rich and the Poor are undistinguishable, all equally cared for and impartially treated, none able to tell the rich man's Son from that of the Poor Widow; The Several teachers and Assistant teachers are Paid by the Trustees a liberal Salary each, there were 109 Boys on the funds of the Institution last year (1857) And upwards of 400 Pupils Attended who Paid School fees, Affords tuition in the various branches of an English, Commercial and Classical education, as Well as drawing and Vocal Music, _____________

destroyed by the inhabitants of the town in 1711 And made into a Bowling Green;- from its Situation and elevation, it would Appear to have been an Admirable Place for a Military Station, being Situated on the most elevated Part of the town and commands an extensive range of view, its proximity to the other two Camps Viz. the remains of one near Castlehead House, and the one which is Said to have Stood West of, and Adjoining the Cemetery, on the lands of Woodside; Would render the Site a desirable Place for a Pretorium, the three being Situated on high eminences and not more than a quarter of a mile between either, forming nearly an equilateral triangle; When the Neilson Institution was being built Some excavations Were made for laying the foundation as Well as with the view of Ascertaining Whether Any Vaults existed underneath as asserted by Some historians; the excavations were narrowly Watched by Mr David Semple, Writer of Paisley, And the result would tend to refute the historians Assertion, as neither Antiquities or Vaults of Any Kind were discovered, ____ This Place is Also Shown on the Plan of Paisley dated 1822, ____ "The Whole of the County of Renfrew, in which Paisley is now the Chief town, lay within the Roman Province of Valentia. The general voice of Antiquarians Assigns Paisley as the Place designated by Ptolomy, the Celebrated Egyptian Geographer, Vanduaria, That the Romans had here a Post of importance is unquestionable, Principal Dunlop wrote his description of Renfrewshire About the end of the Seventeenth Century, and has given the following Account": "That the Romans came to Renfrewshire, is more than probable; for as there are in many Places, from the one end of Clydesdale to the other, of an Old Roman Street from Erickstone" in |

"in the head of Eusdale, to Maul's Mire, at this end where it bordereth this Shire, (Called this day Watline Street * corruptly for Vitellian or Vitellius Street (*Note, the Roman Road here referred to is that from Carlisle to Paisley, Maulsmyre is on the estate of Castlemilk, and not far from Rutherglen, and there the remains of an Ancient Causeway are to be traced) So there are Confirmed vestiges of their having been in this Shire; for at Pasley, there is a large Roman Camp to be Seen. The praetorium or innermost Part of the Camp is on the West end of a rising ground or little hill Called Oakshawhead, on the South-east descent of which Standeth the town of Pasley. The Praetorium is not very large, but hath been Well fortified With three foussees and dykes of earth, which must have been large, when to this day their vestiges are So great that men on horseback will not See over them. The Camp itself hath been great and large, it comprehending the Whole hill. There are Vestiges on the north Side of the foussees and dike, whereby it Appears that the Camp reached to the River Cart. On the North Side, the dike goeth Alongst the foot of the hill; And if we allow it to have gone So far, on the Other Side, it hath enclosed all the Space of ground on which the town of Pasley Stands, And it may be guessed to be About a mile in Compass, Its Situation was both Strong and Pleasant, overlooking the whole Country. I have not heard that any have been So Curious as to dig the ground into the Praetorium; but when they tread upon it, it gives a Sound as if it were hollow below, where belike there are Some of their Vaults, Near to this Camp, About a quarter of a mile, Stands two other rises or little hills, the one to the West, the Other to the South, which, with this, make Almost a triangular form, where have been Stations for the Outer Guards. The Vestiges of these Appear, and make them little larger than the Praetorium of the Other Camp, of the Same form, without Any other fortification than a foussee and dike" ___

The Supposed Site of a Roman Camp Situated at the West end and Adjoining the Cemetery; the Site would appear to have been well Chosen, as it is on elevated ground and commands as extensive prospect of the Surrounding Country for Several miles. There is no vestige of it on the ground at the present time, nor has there been any, it is Said, from time immemorial; the discovery of Some Small earthen drinking Cups in the immediate neighbourhood, by Mr Barr of Ferguslie Place, Several years Ago, when making improvements in his Property, has Some Value as a Piece of inferential evidence With an Association of this Antiquity with the Romans, the Cups referred to have been Seen by an Antiquary of Paisley, who has pronounced them to be Romans; they are three in number, and of Course very rude in Construction & Appearance, And Are now in the Possession of Mrs Barr, Ferguslie Place; the exact Spot where they were found cannot now be identified,_ The Site of this Camp is Shown on a Map of Paisley, professed to have been made from an Actual Survey in 1822, as "the remains of a Roman fortification, Said to have been here, but not now distinguishable." It is also noticed in Crawfords History of Renfrewshire,_ See historical extracts in the descriptive remarks for the Site of the Roman Praetorium at Oakshawhead._ |

A neat freestone Monument, Surmounted by a Small Obelisk, of the Same description of Stone, Was erected in 1835 by the Contributions of various Persons of different denominations, in the town of Paisley and its vicinity, to Perpetuate, it is Said, the memory of two individuals belonging to the Parish of Eastwood, named James Algie and John Park, who Suffered death at the Cross of Paisley in 1685 during the unhappy troubles which proceeded the revolution for adhering to the Covenant, and refusing the Oath of Abjuration,_ They were buried at a place called the Gallowgreen, the Common Place of execution in those days, where a rude Stone with a homely inscription in Verse, was raised to their memory. In 1779 when the town began to extend in that quarter, the remains along with the Old Monumental Stone, Were removed to the Place where the Monument in question now Stands, by Order of the Magistrates; the Original head Stone is laid horizontally and Contiguous to the Monument, at the east Side, And the epitaph, which is now Obliterated, Was transferred on to it. The following are Some of the Particulars engraved on the Sides of the Monument,_ "Erected by the Contributions of Christians of various denominations, in and About Paisley & Renfrew, and to Perpetuate a Memorial of the respect and gratitude, with which Posterity Still Cherish the memory of the Martyrs of Scotland, 1835,_ James Algie and John Park, who Suffered at the Cross of Paisley for refusing the Oath of Abjuration, February 3rd 1685. The Stone containing the epitaph transcribed on the Monument, Was erected over the grave on the Gallowgreen, the place of common execution, and on Occasion of the grounds being built upon, it was removed to this Spot, along with the remains of the Martyrs by Order of the Magistrates in 1779"._ There is a Place of Worship built Adjacent to the Monument, bearing the Appropriate name of Martyrs' Church," The Gallowgreen above referred to lay between Maxwellton Street and Queen Street, its Site is now Occupied by houses & Gardens etc_ |
