012.13 A Substantial Building two Storeys high Slated and in good repair, Situated in Church Hill, and Adjacent to the High and Middle Churches, It is the Oldest School in the Burgh of Paisley and Originally Stood in the School Wynd; Was founded and Endowed in 1576 by James VI of Scotland, and Confirmed Subsequently by Royal Deeds. The Endowments are not now easily distinguished, having been merged in the Property of the Burgh, but Out of which the Town Council have in lieu, fixed an Annual Grant for the Teacher of £17, With School house and dwelling house free, this with the Pupils fees Consists of the Teachers income. The dwelling house is Situated on the Second Storey of the building; Affords tuition in the various branches of a Classical & Commercial education. The Property of the Burgh and in the Gift of the town Council & Magistrates._
"Had all the funds Originally destined for the Support of the Grammar School been retained the Rector would, at this day, have been provided with an Ample Endowment, For We find, that in the year 1576-7, Seven Roods of land, with the revenues and endowments of the Alters, and Chaplaineries in the Church of Paisley, that is, a Chapel formerly in the town of Paisley, dedicated to St Rock, were bestowed on the Magistrates and Community of Paisley for the erection of a Grammar School. These endowments, however, through the lapse of time, have in a great measure, been lost Sight of, and the income of the Teacher at this day consists of merely a School house, dwelling house, and About £17 P [Per] Annum, with the wages of the Scholars". __ The New Statistical account of Scotland.__
