017.05 This is a rectangular building situated on a rocky eminence near the old Farmhouse of Alton the date of its erection is unknown but it appears to be a very old building the walls are standing without a roof, it was surrounded by a strong wall which was entirely taken down to build farm steadings, it is the property of Sir Michael Shaw Stuart Baronet.

"The only antiquity here is the "Castle of Mearns", It is a large
square tower, situated on a rocky eminence, and commanding
an extensive and beautiful prospect. It is not known when it
was built, It is supposed to be several hundred years old,
and to have been used as a place of defence ."
