Crawfurd's History of Renfrew
Robert Freeland. "Gryfe Castle"
Walter King. "Woodend".
F.W. Carlisle Esqr. "Houstonfield" Mr. M. Gemmel Bridge of Weir
007.14 This is applicable to a very remarkable feature North of "Gryfe Castle" of natural formation, though it would appear to be artificial towards the top? At the top is a perfectly level space almost rectangular. To the east of this, joining the same space is a kind of platform of similar construction but much smaller. The centre of this is occupied by a flagstaff and Trig. [Trigonometrical] Station
From the east side of the whole a gradual slope is formed becoming more abrupt as it approaches the South and West sides, thence towards the North where it converges again towards the East.
"Crawfurd" considers this to be the vestage of an "old Camp", and Mr. Carlisle states that Signals were made here to other places in the country during the various disruptions. Mr. Gemmel supposes this to be a place where justice was administered in "old Times".

Note: This is not an artificial mound. The portion where the Flag staf is erected has been thrown up merely to support the staff. The remainder is a natural eminence very conspicuous- J.C.G.
