"The name of Greenock may be derived, from the British Graeanag, signifying a gravelly or sandy place; or, from the Gaelic Grianach, signifying a sunny place. Both these terms are sufficiently applicable to the Site of Greenock, which has a sandy, and gravelly soil; and is finely exposed to the sun, on the margin of a beautiful bay" It is bounded on the north by the Firth of Clyde, on the east by Port Glasgow, on the east and South by Kilmacolm, and on the west by Innerkip - Its extreme length, from North to South, is about 5 miles; its extreme breadth from east to west, about 2½ There are but few antiquities in the parish, and these are not very interesting.
