017.14 | This village consists of two principal Streets nearly paralel, and contains 122 houses. [The] tenements are held on a feu of 999 years [at] trifling cost. The population is poor, and composed principally of weavers, of whom 400 work at the handloom, and 2[?] are employed in a cotton factory situated in the middle of the village. It is in the presbytery of Glasgow, Stipend £278.14.6, appropriated tiends £856.2.5, patron, Allan Gilmour Esq. present incumbent, the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Colville. It contains a church, two dissenting places of worship, besides rooms by different sects as preaching places. The parish [school] contains about 90 Scholars, besides which, there are two [others] containing respectively about 40 & 30 scholars. 40 of the [?] children attend in one or other of these Schools.
