017; 018; 019 | This parish forms the south east corner of Renfrewshire. It is bordered on the N. [North] West by Mearns, from which it is separated by the Earn Water, on the South West and South by Fenwick Loudon in Ayrshire, and on the East by Carmunnock and E. [East] Kilbride in Lanarkshire. The White Cart Water rising in the moor [of] Eaglesham and E. [East] Kilbride divides Renfrewshire] from Lanarkshire as far as Cathcart Eaglesham forms part of the grant made by David I to Walter, founder of the house of Stuart, and was by him transferred to Philip de Montgomerie, about 1160 (see old ballad - Memorables of the Montgomeries, 1600) or according to other authorities to Robert de Montgomerie (see gazetteer.) It remained in the family until the present Earl of Eglinton Sold it to the Messrs. Gilmour in 1844. |
