A small church in ruins, situated within a graveyard, which is still used, its walls are still entire, but roofless. It was used as the Parish Church for Cambusmichael which was united to that of St. Martins nearly 200 years ago. It is the property of the Earl of Mansfield. but the inhabitants of the locality, holds the right of a roadway from the farm house of Cambusmichael to the graveyard, for their internments.
Cambus in the Gaelic language signifying a low plain, is descriptive of the situation of the old parish church of Cambusmichael, as it lies in a plain on the banks of the Tay. (It is not called Caer but Carn) It is still known by this name among the people of the Country. The ground on which the castle stood is considerably elevated, being a circular spot of about 230 feet in diameter, and surrounded by a moat 30 feet in breadth. Tradition has handed down that this place, not being secure against the many insurrections of the times, Macbeth removed to the celebrated Hill of Dunsinnan; that by the advice of two witches, the most celebrated of that time in the Kingdom, & being one on each side of Macbeth, he fortified the Castle on Dunsinnan Hill; that they met him at night at - see other side [continued on next page] |

CAIRN BETH
and see quotations appended -
Similarly the work at Dunsinane Hill is popularly called "Giant's Castle"
but any of the authorities quoted for Macbeaths Castle will also give Cairn Beth (pronounced Carn)
Carn Beth however cannot be translated MacBeth - I think
it is extremely possible that the name has been fancifully inferred
from the Gaelic, Carn Beith, applied to the knoll when it may
have been covered with birch wood. A natural knoll
may have been increased in height by the earth dug out from
the Moat. The vestiges of what remained is embraced
in the designation "Macbeth's Castle", but I think it is preferable
to write in the old character what has given name to the
farm and place. L.B. L.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel] |

[Continued] a place still called "the Witch Stane" (where a remarkable stone still stands) about a mile from his old residence, & warned him to beware "Till Birnam forest come to Dunsinnan". About 24 years ago, a great quantity of earth was removed from one side of the mound, & horse shoes apparently those of ponies, were found in great abundance: likewise handles of swords & dirks".
New Stat, [Statistical] Account 874
"Cairnbeddie is about 3 miles from Dunsinnan Hill. As Macbeth had a castle, which was his usual residence, it is not likely, that he would build another on Dunsinnan Hill so near; he probably kept up the British Fortress on this hill, as a place of retreat on any emergency from which it has got the name of Macbeth's Castle, The term Castle is in many instances in Scotland applied to camps, or fortifications, by entrenchments, and rampart only, and not exclusively to a strong house or tower. Tradition related that Macbeth resided 10 years after his usurption at Carnbiddie. The vestiges of the castle are still to be seen, which the country people call Carn-beth & Macbeth's Castle."
Chalmers Caledonia 414
When Cairnbeddie Mound was opened partially about 30 years since, a quantity of very small iron horse shoes with fragments of swords, & other weapons of the same metal were found. So that it doubtless forms the tumulus on the site of some old & hard-fought battle-field in which the great usurper played his part."

In this wood and near the South end of it, is a large stone, standing upright about 4 feet in height, pillar shaped. & worn away in the middle as by the action of a chain. Regarding this stone there is no tradition farther than that legend in reference to the 2 Witches who met with Macbeth, to advise with him as to the fate of Kingdom.
"During Macbeth's reign Witchcraft was very prevalent in Scotland, and 2 of the most famous Witches in the Kingdom lived on each hand of Macbeth, one at Collace, the other not far from Dunsinane house at a place Called the Cape. The Muir where the witches met, is yet pointed out by the country people, and there is a Stone still preserved, which is called the Witches' Stone. The Muir is now planted by the proprietor, to whom also Carnbeddie belongs"
