A small parish in the south-eastern end of a low-lying fertile district called the Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire. It is bounded on the north-west by Kinfauns, On the NE [North East] and east by Errol on the south by the river Tay and on the west by a detached portion of Kinnoull. Its greatest length from north to south, is about 1¾ mile. Its greatest breadth is about 1½ mile Sir John S. Richardson Bart. [Baronet] is the sole heritor, or proprietor of the parish "In ancient records the name of this parish is almost invariably spelled St. Madois instead of St. Madoesits modern orthography" but the popular name and that by which it is called by the inhabitants in the district is Semmiedores. It is believed to be a corruption of St. Madoch, or Modoch, who is said to have been a missionary Bishop in Scotland in the third or fourth century, and from whom it is said that Kilmadock parish in this county got its name.
