The Site of this object is marked in the Street by a peculiar arrangement of the paving Stones By references to it at an early date in the City records it appears to be of very ancient date. It is probable that there was a Cross as early as the town became of sufficient importance as to have a market, and very likely the original Stone Cross which was used in primitive times was replaced in subsequent times by a fabric quite dissimilar to that of the primitive stone cross. It is noticed in the Session Record, of 1578 and ordered to be repaired. In 1652 it was demolished by Cromwell and the material used in building the Citadel. It was rebuilt in 1688. It was finally removed in 1765 by order of the town Council. It was twelve feet high and had a flight of steps within which led to a terrace or balcony above-
