098 | [Situation] Includes part of Barrossa Place Barrossa Street Rose Terrace Athole Crescent etc etc. It appears by the City Records and other documents that the name Gilten Arbour, or Herbar applied as a proper name to some grounds which belonged to the Black Friars Monastery. Originally it was the Kings garden which was attached to the Castle which Stood somewhere in the Castlegable and the name it appears was originally applied to a Summer house which in the Said garden but in after times the name was applied to the gardens. It is recorded in Several accounts that it was in this Gilten Arbour that King Robert III, and his courtiers posted themselves to witness the battle of the Clans which took place on the North Inch. The grounds occupied by Athole Crescent and Rose Terrace are generally believed to be the grounds formerly Known as the Gilten Arbour. [continued on next page] |
