098 [Situation] At the east end of the South Street. -
Of all the private houses of note in olden times in the City of Perth this was the most noted, especially on account of the transaction Known as the Gowrie Conspiracy which was an attempt of the Earl of Gowrie to assassinate King James VI. The site of the house or Palace as it is sometimes called is now partly occupied by the northern portion of the County Prison and a part of the County Buildings. It extended thence to the Water Vennel and part of it extended a considerable distance along the South Side of said Vennel and some remains of it are still standing along the south side of the vennel
