098 [Situation] West side of St John Street
This building may be said to be at once the most ancient the most imposing and in all respects the chief public building of Perth. It was origionally called the KirK of the Holy Cross of St. John the Baptist. As early as the dawn of Scottish history, or as tradition states as early as the beginning of the fifth century there was a Church here of this name but it is the opinion of some Archaeologists that the present fabric does not date older than the latter part of the 14th or early part of the 15th century but there is good reason to believe that part of the present is the work of the 12th or 13th century before the Reformation it was occupied as one church but it is now divided into 3 separate churches by means of portion walls. See Descriptive RKs [Remarks] for East Middle and West churches.
