A plain but well constructed edifice built about [1840] for the accommodation of popular assemblies for public amusements (not dramatic) etc. an attractive and fashionable nature for scientific lectures and for numerously attended festivities. For a long time the want of such a place of meeting in Perth had been felt. The call for a plain but extensive arena became general. The Town Council in [1845] resolved to supply the desideratum. The large hall is spacious and elegant capable of accomodating more than 2,000 at promiscuous meeting or 1800 persons with sittings and moveable seats are provided for the number. Besides a spacious lobby with a commodius gallery above there are two long antechambers and a retiring room with a grand lantern light at top. The large hall is also lighted from above. There are no windows in the walls of either apartment.
