107 | A large upright stone about 1 feet in height, situated near the farmsteading of Dalchirla. From enquiries made I find that popular tradition associates the stone, together with others situated easterly, with the Druidical Era. I have also been informed that it has been the subject of discussion among the intelligent, and the lovers of antiquity, in the locality, as to what era it should be associated with, the majority however have given it favor of the Druidical. It will no doubt appear somewhat strange, that all the Standing Stones in the adjacent Sheet (106) are ascribed to the Romans, while those in Sheet 107 are said to be of Druidical origin. This apparent incongruity is only explained from the circumstance of their being both history and tradition to support the fact of a battle having been fought in the district where the so called Roman Stones exist, between the Romans and Caledonians, while there is nothing to shew that any engagement ever took place between these armies where the Druidical Remains are pointed out; Be this as it may, it is certain that all the Standing Stones between Dunniehan farmsteading, and the River Earn are locally and traditionally said to be Druidical, and there is no other course to follow than to shew them as such on the plans; |
