New Statistical Account for Kilmadock |
132 |
This place is situated on the old high road from Doune to Dunblane, at a point where a burn crosses the road with a low bridge over it (there would likely be no bridge in 1424) about midway between the farms of Greenyards and Anchorcross, and about 2½ miles from Doune and better than one from Dunblane. The stream at this point is the Bdy [Boundary] between Lecropt and Dunblane. Extract from Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Murdoch, son of Robert, who was son of Robert II, King of Scotland being taken prisoner by the English at the Battle of Homildon in 1401 and Succeeded his father in the government in 1420, but resigned it 4 years afterwards, his resignation was followed by an accusation of high treason against him, his two sons and father-in-law, who was seized and carried prisoner to Stirling, Murdoch was taken betwixt Doune and Dunblane at a small rivulet, which was called "Murdochs Ford", a name which it retains to this day. |

Mr James Young Factor, Keir Mains by Bridge of Allan
Revd [Reverend] P. W. Young. Lecropt Manse by Bg. [Bridge] of Allan
Mr J Buchanan, Keir Mains. |
132 |
This camp, which is situated about ¼ of a mile north of Lecropt Manse, is an oval shaped eminence of about 30 feet in height, with traces of of a trench and embanKment around its summit, also a slight elevation in the centre, upon which in all probability stood the Praetorium. The general opinion is that it is one of the chain of camps or signal points used for communicating between Stirling Castle and Ardoch. But Rev. [Reverend] P. W. Young, gives another account of this place, although he admits that it certainly may have been a camp previously. He states, that the Lairds of Keir had feudal power in this district and were able to pit and jibbet all those whom they thought proper, & that this eminence was used for judicial purposes. Both these accounts may be correct, the place at first sight has the appearance of a large tumulus, but upon closer inspection the traces of a camp may be seen. |
