[yards] broad, when excavated, some human bones and fragments of Urns were found, It is situated in a belt of Wood on the south border of the Blair Drummond, demesne, The trench is fast filling in, and is at the present time only a few feet deep. The fact of urns having been found in it would point to its being of the Roman period. The following is copied from the Statistical Account. "There is a Tumulus near Blair Drummond, East Lodge, in which, on being opened, some fragments of Urns and human bones were found. It is surrounded by a circular foss from which it has been formed, and is vulgarly called Wallace's Trench. It is 63 yards in circumference and 5 feet in height from the bottom of the fosse. The history of Sir William Wallace brings him, after having burned the Peel (a stronghold) of Gurgunnock, across the Forth to this very point, by a road which led across the Moss of Kincardine to a ford in the Teith, where, in the ordinary state of the river, it is fordable. |
