DOUNE CASTLE [continued from page 107]
is built, may be seen the foundation of a wall, from which it has been inferred that the castle was once encompassed by a strong wall for the purpose of defence. Everything connected with the origin of this castle is entirely obscure. It is neither known when nor by whom it was built. The general opinion is, that it was erected during the fourteenth century, at which time it was the seat of the Earls of Monteith. It is said that Mary, Queen of Scots, resided in this castle. In the sixteenth century it was often the residence of Margaret, wife of James the fourth. It is now in the hands of the Earl of Moray Doune Lodge, Nr. [Near] Doune. The whole of the castle is in a ruinous state. The upper roof is entirely away.
