In Jamieson's Dictionary grain is defined as apply- -ing "to the branches of a valley at the upper end where it divides into two as Lewinshope Grains". It is also applied "to the branch of a river" Should not the name be applied to the ground immediately between the two streams where they unite? Enquiry to be made and the name written so as to apply properly and De- -scriptive Rks. [Remarks] to be written accordingly. Also is there not a hill or eminence Called Cadger Gate Head? or perhaps Gate, here is Scotticism for road or way. Is the public road here Called Cadger Gate? of which it is understood the above gate may be either the head or termination? Trace 6 Greenlaw Hill. Should not [Right hand side of this page] [Outer Grain] There is no such object [Greenknowes] It should be written in two words [Cadger Gate] This name applies to the road & not the gate, of which the latter there is Known as being the head. It is now marKed on the trace [Cadger Gate Head] This old road leads from Glendevon to Auchterarder having an incline all the way up from the farm to that part of it called Cadger Gate Head or Cadgergate Head thence the incline is down to Aughter [right hand side of image] this name be simply "Green Law"? The word law is well Known to mean hill, therefore it is absurd to add the word, unless as it happens Sometimes, that there is a house called Greenlaw in the immediate neighbourhood but there seems to be no such object here, and more over if such was the case it should be stated in Descriptive Rks. [Remarks] Sheet 127 No. 3 Trace 2 The names Fawncleuch Hill and Fawncleuch Burn occur on this trace. Is there not a cleuch called Fawn Cleuch on this plan or adjoining one? Trace 3 Innergrain Burn is written on this trace. Is there not an object called Inner Grain? Trace 4 Wanangoat Burn. Is there not an object called Wanan Goat? Kaim Know, is written on trace but in Name Sheet it is written Kaimknow. Traces and Name Sheet should exactly agree In valn. [valuation] Roll this name is written Kaimknowe. Is not this the proper spelling? [Right hand side of this page] [Green Law] Some people call it Green Law Hill but I understand it is commonly called Green Law [Fawncleuch] There is no such object or cleuch [Innergrain Burn] No such object [Wanan Goat] None [Kaim Know] Kaimknowe is proper [continued on next page]

OS1/25/35/90C [Page] 90c [continued from page 90b] Trace 5 Hunthall Is written on trace but not entered in Name Sheets.Descriptive RemarKs required to be written. The name "Hillkitty" as applied to a hill on the trace is rather doubtful. Can you ascertain what gave rise to this name. On Stobies County map there is shewn a house on the south side of this hill called "Holekelly" This house which has, it appears, been removed I would be inclined to think gave rise to the name of the hill. Therefore should not the hill be called HoleKelly Hill? and the burn at this place Trace 6 Glendevon Castle is entered in Name Sheets but no authority is given for the name. Please supply authority for name and Spelling. Is there any account of its history either traditional or otherwise in the neighbourhood? By whom, or when was it built? What family possessed it? [Right hand side of this page] [Hunthall] Name Sheet now supplied [HillKitty] Hillkitty is proper There is no tradition as to the origin of the name, but a Mr George Forbes, Glenhead gives me to understand that he saw the records of a Law plea which happened some seventy years ago where in it is designated by an Edinburgh Lawyer as "Holy Keely" which certainly must have been either burlesque upon the satanick features or bumps of the objects or the learned gentleman was very wrongly informed about the name [Glendevon Castle] Mr Martin,Teacher, & Mr Cunningham, Minister, are authorities for this name. It is sometimes wrongly called "Whitehill Castle." There is no such place nowadays as "Whitehill" There is no tradition connected with it, more than that at one time it was occupied by the followers of the great Duke of Montrose & the Earl of Crawford to whose family it formerly belonged Is it not called White hills Castle as on Co. [County] maps? Whitehills, and E [Easter] Glensherup formerly belonging to the Crawford family. [continued on next page]

OS1/25/35/90D [Page] 90d [continued from page 90c] Sheet 127 No. 5 Trace 6 Smithscleuch Burn. Is there not an object called "Smith's Cleuch" on this or adjoining traces, which gave rise to the name of the above burn? Sheet 127 No.6 Trace3 The name Meadow Burn and Leas Burn are entered in Name Sheets with reference to this trace but these names do not appear on trace Also the Leas Burn is described as "a small stream flowing southward past the farm steading of Glenhead" but there does not appear to be such a stream on trace. There is apparently a stream flowing northwards, Will you have the good- -ness to write these names on trace to their respective objects. Sheet 127 No. 7 Trace 2. A farm steading. Is there not an Easter, and a Wester Glensherup? There are farms valued in the Co. [County] valn. [valuation] Roll by these names. Also shoud not the spelling be Glensherrup as in the valn. [valuation] Roll? [Right hand side of this page] [Smith' Cleuch] None [Meadow Burn and Leas Burn] Names now written. [Glensherup] What was fomerly the property Known as Wester Glensherup is now generally called Glensherup - the names & spelling adopted by the Rent receipts. What was formerly known as Easter Glensherup changed for Glendevon House. Is not the farm steading on this trace called "Wester Glensherrup"? [continued on next page]

OS1/25/35/90E [Page] 90e [continued from page 90d] Trace 4 The Shank. This name is entered twice in Name Sheet as if applying to different hills on this plan Are there two hills of this name? and if so let the name be written on traces. Are there no distinctive terms or desig- -nations to distinguish the one from the other? Trace 5 Cowcleuch Burn. is there not an object in the vicinity of this burn called Cow Cleuch? Sheet 127 No. 10 Trace 2 Reacleuch Burn. Is there not an object in the vicinity of this burn called Rea Cleuch? Trace 4 Middlehill Burn. This name is written on trace but not entered in Name Sheets. Descriptive Rks.[Remarks] to be written Sheet 127 No. 11 Trace 1 Darn Stripe is written on this trace but on trace 3 of Sheet 127 No. 10 is written Darncleuch Burn to the same object. Will you have the goodness to look to this and ascertain which name is correct. [Right hand side of this page] [The Shank] There is only one hill called The Shank & on this trace, therefore more than one description would be superfluous [Cowcleuch Burn] None [Reacleuch Burn] None [Middlehill Burn] Name sheet now written [Darn Stripe] Darn Stripe is proper Trace 2 Innerdownie. As this name does not very clearly imply Hill Should not the word "Hill" be added? Is it not generally called Innerdownie Hill? It is written "Innerdownie Hill" on the Co. [County] maps, which I consider to be the correct mode. Sheet 127 No. 12 Trace 2 Howcleuch Burn The same remarK applies to this as to Cowcleuch Burn and Reacleuch Burn - see opposite page Remark on Examination Sheet 118 No. 16 Trace 6 Please test the accuracy of the detail at the point (A) see remark in pencil. Sheet 127 No. 8 Trace 6 Test that portion of River Law estate which is correct the portion in pencil,or the part traced in Red Please to have these Remarks attended to as soon as possible; Sapper Kiernan, would be the best person to tend to them. By Order Robert WinKup 2nd Corp. RE [Corporal Royal Engineers] [Right hand side of this page] [Innerdownie] It is never called Innerdownie Hill. It is generally known by the name Innerdownie, which I adopted. Innerdownie hill would appear better but it is never called so [Howcleuch Burn] This is Known by the name How Cleuch & now written [point A] I was creditably given to understand by Mr Marr that this point had been made all right in the common worK which made me loth to interfere with what I considered finally settled. It was extremely foggy while I was listing the worK about the station on Sim's Hill else I would not fail to see this mistake The portion of the river in red is correct, agreeing with the turnpike road John Tiernan Sapper R.E.
