A parish of the Ochil district in the SE. [South East] part of Perthshire; bounded on the north by Blackford and Auchterarder on the east by Fossaway, on the SE. [South East] by Muckhart on the south by Clackmannanshire and Blackford. It is about 5½ miles in length, and in breadth over half its length it is about 4 miles and over the other half it is about 1¾ miles. The whole parish lies among the Ochil Hills and is therefore a remarkably hilly district. The river Devon comes in upon it from the west 3 miles from its source and forms for about 2¾ miles the northern boundary line of the narrow part of the parish, flows eastwards for about 2½ miles through the main body, This river opens up in its progress a glen or narrow vale and in doing so gives name to the parish. The parish is in the presbytery of Auchterarder and Synod of Perth and Stirling. Patron the Crown. There are no detached portions of Glendevon, nor are any detached portions of any other parish within it. |

[East] Glensherup and Whitehills belonged. It is longer than most of the Same kind and must have been built at a Considerable expence as many of the stones came from a distance by a road that was but deemed accessible for Carriages of any kind. This house was sometime in ruins but was lately fitted up by the proprietor for the accommadation of tenants.' O.S.O. [Ordnance Survey Office] Perth
19th November 1861
Will you have the goodness to
cause Garchel Hill to be erased
on Plan15 Sheet 127 of the Parish
of Glendevon County of Perth
And to write in place of it Whitewisp
Hill. It was found ,in the examination
of Dollar Parish that Whitewisp Hill
is the correct name, and as the parish
boundary crosses this hill it is necessary
to have the Glendevon plans corrected,
as I presume they are not published

Remarks on Name
Sheets Parish of Glendevon
Sheet 118 No.15
Trace 4
Jamie's Grain, "A Small
elevated ridge of ground", &c,
This application of the
name Jamie's Grain ap-
pears evidently to be in-
Correct.
In Jamieson's Dictionary
grain is defined as apply-
-ing "to the branches of a
valley at the upper end
where it divides into two
as Lewinshope Grains". It
is also applied "to the branch
of a river"
Should not
the name be applied to
the ground immediately between the two
streams where they unite?
Enquiry to be made and
the name written so as
to apply properly and De-
-scriptive Rks. [Remarks] to be written
accordingly.
Trace 5
The same remarks as above
apply to Holegrain Also the
name should be written
Hole Grain.
Trace 6
From the name Outergrain
Burn on this trace, may
[Right hand side of this page]
[Jamie's Grain]
This name is written, & Known
only, to apply to the "Small elevated
ridge of ground, & not to any other
object. It does not apply to
the ground immediately between
the stwo streams
[Holegrain]
The above applies to Hole Grain
which should be written in two words

be inferred that there is an
object called Outer Grain
and it appears plainly
that there is such an
object at the meeting
of the two streams.
Enquiry to be made
and the name to be
written and Descriptive
Rks [Remarks] to be written.
It is also evident that
the name Greenknowes on
this trace should be
written as two words viz.
Green Knowes.
Sheet 118 No. 16
Trace 5
Cadger Gate Head. Is described
in Name Sheet as applying to a
gate. The name evidently
Contradicts this application
Is not the gate Called
Cadger Gate? Also is there
not a hill or eminence
Called Cadger Gate Head?
or perhaps Gate, here
is Scotticism for road or
way. Is the public road
here Called Cadger Gate?
of which it is understood
the above gate may be either
the head or termination?
Trace 6
Greenlaw Hill. Should not
[Right hand side of this page]
[Outer Grain]
There is no such object
[Greenknowes]
It should be written in two words
[Cadger Gate]
This name applies to the road
& not the gate, of which the latter
there is Known as being the head. It
is now marKed on the trace
[Cadger Gate Head]
This old road leads from
Glendevon to Auchterarder having
an incline all the way up from the farm
to that part of it called Cadger
Gate Head or Cadgergate Head
thence the incline is down to Aughter
[right hand side of image]
this name be simply "Green
Law"? The word law is well
Known to mean hill, therefore
it is absurd to add the
word, unless as it happens
Sometimes, that there is a
house called Greenlaw
in the immediate neighbourhood
but there seems to be no
such object here, and
more over if such was the
case it should be stated
in Descriptive Rks. [Remarks]

Wanangoat Burn. Is there
not an object called Wanan Goat?
Kaim Know, is written

it is written Kaimknow. Traces
and Name Sheet should exactly agree
In valn. [valuation] Roll this name
is written Kaimknowe.Is not
this the proper spelling?

[Green Law]
Some people call it Green
Law Hill but I understand it
is commonly called Green Law
[Fawncleuch]

Hunthall Is written on
trace but not entered
in Name Sheets.Descriptive
RemarKs required to
be written.
The name "Hillkitty"
as applied to a hill on the
trace is rather doubtful.
Can you ascertain what
gave rise to this name.
On Stobies County map
there is shewn a house on
the south side of this hill
called "Holekelly" This
house which has, it appears,
been removed I would
be inclined to think gave
rise to the name of the
hill. Therefore should
not the hill be called
HoleKelly Hill? and
the burn at this place
Trace 6
Glendevon Castle is entered
in Name Sheets but no
authority is given for the
name. Please supply
authority for name and
Spelling. Is there any
account of its history either
traditional or otherwise
in the neighbourhood?
By whom, or when was it
built? What family possessed it?
[Right hand side of this page]
[Hunthall]
Name Sheet now supplied
[HillKitty]
Hillkitty is proper
There is no tradition as to the
origin of the name, but a
Mr George Forbes, Glenhead gives me to
understand that he saw the records
of a Law plea which happened
some seventy years ago where in it
is designated by an Edinburgh
Lawyer as "Holy Keely" which
certainly must have been either
burlesque upon the satanick
features or bumps of the objects
or the learned gentleman was very
wrongly informed about the name
[Glendevon Castle]
Mr Martin,Teacher, & Mr
Cunningham, Minister, are authorities for
this name. It is sometimes wrongly
called "Whitehill Castle." There is no such
place nowadays as "Whitehill" There
is no tradition connected with it, more
than that at one time it was occupied
by the followers of the great Duke of
Montrose & the Earl of Crawford
to whose family it formerly belonged
Is it not called
White hills Castle as on Co. [County] maps? Whitehills, and E [Easter] Glensherup
formerly belonging to the Crawford family.

to this and ascertain which
name is correct.

[The Shank]
There is only one hill called
The Shank & on this trace, therefore
more than one description would
be superfluous
[Cowcleuch Burn]
None
[Reacleuch Burn]
None
[Middlehill Burn]
Name sheet now written
[Darn Stripe]
Darn Stripe is proper
Trace 2
Innerdownie. As this name
does not very clearly imply
Hill Should not the
word "Hill" be added?
Is it not generally called
Innerdownie Hill?
It is written "Innerdownie
Hill" on the Co. [County] maps, which
I consider to be the correct
mode.
Sheet 127 No. 12
Trace 2
Howcleuch Burn The same
remarK applies to this as
to Cowcleuch Burn and
Reacleuch Burn - see opposite page

[Innerdownie]
It is never called Innerdownie
Hill. It is generally known by the
name Innerdownie,which I
adopted. Innerdownie hill would
appear better but it is never called
so
[Howcleuch Burn]
This is Known by the name
How Cleuch & now written
[point A]
I was creditably given to
understand by Mr Marr that this
point had been made all right
in the common worK which made
me loth to interfere with what
I considered finally settled. It was
extremely foggy while I was listing the
worK about the station on Sim's Hill
else I would not fail to see this mistake
The portion of the river in red is
correct, agreeing with the turnpike
road
