This name applies to a circular enclosure planted with trees On this place there was formerly Some building which has long Since been removed and there is now no recollection or tradition in the locality what it was or what was its origin or use. when the circular wall enclosing the area was being constructed two Stone Coffins were found in the Centre of the place One of which is still left open. It is Shewn on Stobie's Co. [County] map as a Circular hill fort and from the prefix "Car" there is good reason to believe or infer that it was a fort
On the lands of Aldie there is rising a ground Carleith. On the middle of this ground are the ruins of an old building perfectly Circular and nearly 24 feet diameter. Not long ago the proprietor ordered this ground to be planted and the Stones were dug up to make the fence. When the work people were going on they found two Stone Coffins near the Centre. They were 4 feet long and 3 feet broad and Contained to all appearance Some human bones and teeth and Something resembling tallow which went to ashes as soon as exposed to the air. One of the Stone Coffins was destroyed before the workmen attended to it. The other was preserved entire, and Consists of 5 Stones pretty exactly joined together and a very large one for the Cover. Various conjectures are formed Concerning these ruins. Some imagine that it has been a place of worship others that it was a burying place and that some persons of distinction have been buried there. Although a satisfactory acct. [account] cannot be given it is accounted one of the antiquities of the parish"
