The parish of Dunblane is supposed to take its name from St. Blane, a Culdee, and Holme Hill, an eminence or dun overlooking the Cathedral; it is in the Presbytery of Dunblane, Synod of Perth and Stirling.
The Parish contains 18,635 Statute Acres and is bounded on the East and North East by the parishes of Alva, Blackford, and Ardoch, on the North by the parish of Muthill and a detached part No. 4 of Monzievaird and Strowan, on the West by the Parish of Kilmadock and on the South by the parishes of Lecropt and Logie.
Stirling is the nearest market town to Dunblane distant about 5½ miles and the only other village in the parish is that of Kinbuck.
The Sheriff Substitute of the Western district of Perthshire resides in Dunblane. Connected with his Court there are a Sheriff Clerk, Procurator Fiscal and four other practising attorneys. There are no detached portions of Dunblane in any other Parish, nor is there a detached portion of any Parish in Dunblane. |

This is a large and remarkable stone situated in the middle of a field immediately in front of the farm-steading of Whitestone. Popular tradition has ascribed its erection to Wallace, in commemoration of a victorious encounter with the English Army on the slopes of the Ochills. This however, is merely a tradition and there is no doubt whatever that this stone is Druidical both from its position and appearance. Several eminent antiquarians are disposed to consider it as such. |

These are two remarkable stones, situated on a fence immediately above the Ardoch Burn and about ¼ of a mile north of the farm of Auchinteck, they are of great size and are remarkable as being composed of small boulders cemented together by sand and gravel. This has no doubt been produced by the action of water and the appearance of the ground shows that the Ardoch Burn formerly occupied a channel at least 50 higher than its present
level |

Statistical Account |
125 |
Supposed to have been founded by David I in 1140. It consisted of a nave and choir, having no transepts. The oriel window of the choir is 40 feet in height, and has elegant mullions; but it was for a long time built up with coarse rubble, until 1819 when the choir was repaired. The nave is 130 feet in length, 58 in breadth and fifty in height. The main entrance is from the west, an ornamental archway, above which is a large window which has three tall lanceheaded compartments, formed by outer and inner mullions. Two rows of large columns, extending along the interior, are still entire. The tower, 128 feet in height, rises on the south side of the Cathedral and is supposed to have been erected at three successive periods. The lower part, which is Norman, is believed to have been constructed by David I; the middle part, in the plain pointed style, was added by Bishop Clement; and the upper portion by Bishop Ochiltree. The choir, being the parish church, is kept in a good state of repair; the tower, in which are the bells and a clock, has a slated roof; but all the other parts are in ruins, tho' in good preservation.

[Page] 54 [Cathedral continued]
"The great relic of antiquity in this parish is the Cathedral. Date of its erection uncertain, possibly 1140, in the reign of David I. None of the Diocesan records are known to exist. The nave is 130 feet by 58. It was unroofed probably at the Reformation. The choir which is the parish church is 80 feet by 30. There were no transepts. The tower is 128 feet high, and seems, from its three different styles of Architecture, to have been erected in three successive periods. Probably a church with a tower, both in the earliest style, was afterwards enlarged into the nave, and had the choir added at a subsequent period. Some of the Prebend stalls, in curiously carved oak, are placed in the lobby of the parish church, and the original Popish roof is still on the choir." Removed in 1851 and a new plain roof supplied. " The windows of the choir were renewed at considerable expense in the ornamental Gothic style in 1819, and the interior having been then repaired at the instance of the Earl of Kinnoul, the whole appearance of the parish church is striking and elegant".

"The name is supposed to be derived from St. Blane, a Culdee, and Holme Hill, an eminence or dun overlooking the Cathedral "Statistical Acct.[Account]
It is irregularly built on a steep slope on the east bank of the Allan. The streets are narrow and winding. The houses are generally from two to three storeys on the west side facing the river and but one or two at most on the east, owing to the steepness of the ground on which they are, for the most part, built. There are four places of worship & four schools. It has a few small grocer and draper shops, a post office, one hotel and three public houses. A substantial stone bridge of one arch across the Allan , on the turnpike road, connects the small portion of the town on the west side of the river with the principal part on the east. It has none of the priveleges of a City, neither is it generally recognised as such, although some wish to lay claim to the title from it being at one time the seat of a bishopric. Weekly markets were formerly held here but are not now, and it can only be considered now as a large village- It is somewhat frequented by visitors in the summer months on account of its rural beauty, vicinage to Bridge of Allan, and the mineral spring near the north of the village. |
