126 | A block of whinstone on Sheriff Muir embedded in the soil, it is about 4 feet long and 10 inches above the surface. This Stone is said to mark the spot where the Highland army assembled at the memorable battle of Sheriff Muir in 1715, it is covered with an iron grating on which is a brass plate bearing the following inscription. The Gathering Stone of the Highland Army On the day of the memorable Battle of Sheriff Muir Fought in Nov [November] 1715 This grating has been erected to preserve the stone by John Stirling Esqr. of Kippendavie Principal Heritor in the Parish of Dunblane Kippenross 15th Nov [November] 1840 |
