063 | A small hill on the South shore of the Loch of Clunie From the level appearance of the district it might be inferred that artificial means were employed to raise this hill to its present height. It appears to have been a fortified place. Judging from its present appearance, on the south side there are several embankments raised at equal distances from each other. Instead of Corresponding trenches at the bases, the ground projects horizontally from the base of the first slope or inside wall, three or, in some places, more yards, and so on in succession to the outside. These slopes on the South side gradually terminate into three, of large dimensions, at the south west angle, one of these drops off at the nor [north] -west angle, the remaining two slopes continue on the north face, and east, and forms an irregular connection with the slopes on the south side. The summit is level, on the east end there are two small compact heaps of Stone and Cement, partly grown over with earth, the remains of a Castle erected by King Malcolm II. The entrance to a subterraneous passage on the north side, has, for many years, been closed or filled up. On the western shore of the loch stands the old castle hill, - a large green mound, partly natural and partly artificial, on the top of which are the ruins of a very old building "Some aged [continued on page 51] |
