"The name of this parish is from Caer, signifying in the Celtic language a village, and Cill, a place of worship, or burial. It was formerly called West Parish, and is said to have been part of the parish of Coupar Angus, but has long since been disjoined from that, and erected into a distinct parochial district. Bishop Spottiswood mentions, that, as far back as the year 1514, Andrew Stuart, brother to John Earl of Athole, got the benefices of Cargill and Alyth. This parish is situated in the large vale of Strathmore, and is bounded on the north, by the River Isla; on the east by Kettins; on the south-east, by Longforgan and Abernythe; on the south by St. Martins and Collace; and on the west by the River Tay. There are four villages in the parish Woodside, Burrelton, Wolfhill and Cargill. the main line of railway to Aberdeen, known as the Scottish North Eastern, runs through the northern extremity of this Parish The only Antiquities are the supposed Roman Station at Castlehill, Vestiges of the Roman Road, the Ancient Mansion-house of Stobhall, Macbeth's Law, Standing Stones &c &c."

This name is applied to the remains of a place of defence, situated on the banks of the river tay; it is well defended on the south west by a deep ravine, and on the North W. [West] by the steep banks of the river, the remains of a ditch is quite discernable that has guarded the other exposed parts. Mr. Duncan believes, that it has been in connection with the old castle of Kinclaven on the opposite side of the river.
"Near the confluence of the Tay & Isla, and exactly opposite to the ancient castle of Kinclaven on the other side of the river, are discovered plain vestiges of a Roman Station, Now called the Castle Hill; one side of this encampment is defended by a deep ravine; a high breast work & strong entrenchments guard it on all other sides where it was anyhow accessible. The fossae are perfectly discernable, & the aqueduct by which they were filled from a neighbouring rivulet, is still in high preservation, but the site of this encampment is now converted into a cornfield.
Et feges est ubi Troja fuit. In this camp, according to Boethius, the Romans took up their winter-quarters under Tribellius, after Agricola left him, & preserved their communication with other detachments of their troops who had advanced farther into the country, towards the foot of the Grampians."

An old road, which the authorities here quoted, say, that it is traditionally handed down as having been made by the Romans, and had extended from Stirling to Coupar Angus. John Pirnie says that when he was a boy at school in Newbigging, that the portion of it passing Gallowhill was quite entire, and went under the name of the Long Causeway, from the fact of it being paved with stones. The greater portion of it through this parish is long since obliterated and cannot now be identified, except the site of those 2 portions. 1st. at Woodhead in plan "74.10 " and secondly at Gallowhill in Plan "74.7." These were pointed out by Peter Stewart, And Mrs Boyd of Gallowhill.
In reference to the portion on this plan passing Wellsies, there is nothing to appearance remarkable about it, farther than any other worn out, or disused road. And as to its continuation from the "Village Acres", Mr. Ramsay says that it had passed close by the Free Church in Woodside, and crossed the Turnpike road somewhere about 50 yards south West of the farm house of Crossroads in plan 75-1. thence to the Roman Camp at Coupar Angus.
Its whole Course through the parish seems to have kept the summit of a gentle ridge where a good view of the adjacent country can can be obtained. |

"The Roman Road, & Richard's Itinerary, took different directions; and we may infer,
from this unnoticed circumstance, that they belonged to different ages, or at least
were composed, with dissimlar views. Having crossed the Tay, by means of the wooden
bridge, the Roman road went up the east side of the river, and passed through the
centre of the camp at Grassy-walls. From this position, the remains of the road are distinct,
for a mile, up to Gellyhead (in Scone parish), on the west of which it passed; and
went on, by Innerbuist, to Nether Collin, where it again becomes apparent; and
continues distinct to the eye, for 2½ miles; passing, in its obvious course, to
Drichmuir and Byres (in St. Martins parish). The Road now went forward, in a
North east direction, passing between Blairhead and Gillwell, to Woodhead;
and thence pushing on, by Newbigging, and Gallowhill, on the right, it
decends Leyston-Moor; and passing that Village, it proceeds forward to the
Roman camp at Coupar Angus."

A small plot of ground planted with Oak, and enclosed by a very thick stone wall portions of which are now much delapsed. John Scott, J. Pirnie, (the latter whose progenitors had lived, & been tenants here for some generations) Say that the above wall is the only evidence now left of a Monastery which had belonged to the "Abbey of Coupar Angus". At the N.W. [North West] angle is the ruins of a small house, and the ruins of another are clearly to been seen a little to the westward, these Mr. Pirnie, says, were dwelling houses.
"Upon the top of a high rock which rises perpendicular above the Linn of Campsie, in a most romantic situation, stand the ruins of an old religious house, dependent on the Abbey of Cupar."
New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
"By a deed dated 24th. Oct. [October] 1538 Donald Campbell then Abbot of the Abbey of Cupar, let in lease for 19 years to Mr. Archibald Macbroke, Advocate, & his heir male, the places and lands of Campsey, with the fishings thereon, together with the forrestrie of Campsey on payment of £20. _____ & bring sufficient Wax to St. Hunnand's lyght and Chapel &c &c This Mr. Macbroke was probably both a priest & lawyer, who conducted the business before the Kings Courts & the Church, and the place of Campsey seems to have been a retreat for the Abbot and Monks when they were disposed either for pleasure or devotion. The Abbey of Cupar was supplied with fuel from the wood of Campsey & the road they made use of to convey it thither is still called the Abbey Road."

[Additional quotations:]
"We now return to the Fair Maid of Perth
who had been sent from the horrible scene
at Falkland, by order of Douglas, to be
placed under the protection of his daugh-
ter, the now widowed Duchess of Rothsay.
That lady's temporary residence was a
religious house called Campsie, the ruins
of which still occupy a striking situation
on the Tay. It arose on the summit of a
precipitous rock, which descends on
the princely river, there rendered pe-
culiarly remarkable by the cataract
called Campsie Linn, where its waters
rush tumultuously over a range of
basaltic rock, which intercepts the
current like a dike erected by human
hands. Delighted with a site so
romantic, the Monks of the Abbey
of Cupar reared a structure there,
dedicated to an obscure Saint, named
St. Hunnand, and hither they were
wont themselves to retire for pleasure
or devotion."
Fair Maid of Perth

"Campsie in the Parish of Cargill where it
appears that the Abbot had a residence to which
he and his friends occasionally retired. The
tenant of Campsie bound himself to make
payment of .... sufficient wax to St. Hunnand's
lyght and Chapel.
Although traces of the ruins of a Chapel
& burial ground are still visible at Campsie,
and the track by which fuel was conveyed is
still called Abbey Road (see page 20), nothing is known
of the Site of St. Hunnand's Chapel, which apparently
stood in the neighbourhood.
A small portion of the building, an Archway stands
at the S.W. [South West] corner of the Churchyard"

In the ornamental ground [of Lawton House] is a fine conical earthen mound kept in good preservation, respecting which Duncan McGregor of Lawton, says that, it is handed down by tradition, as being the place where "Macbeth" held his courts & dispensed laws. "There are several round artificial little hills, or conical mounds in the parish called Laws, particularly one at Lawton, the property of George Wright Esqr. which, as it is situated in the near neighbourhood of Macbeth's castle on Dunsinnan hill, is said to have been the place where Macbeth dispensed laws & settled differences among his subjects."
