A small but tolerably high hill on the farm of Taradoun. On its summit is a very entire fortification which is defended on the N. [North] & N.W. [North West] and S.W. [South West] sides by three tiers of ramparts or mounds, and on the east by the natural face of the hill which is inaccessible, rough, and rugged with outcropping rocks. Concerning it there are no traditions in the locality farther than the Authorities attribute it to the Roman period. But its shape and form is more in keeping with the ancient British fortifications. In the centre of it, a well is visible which is nearly filled.
"About a mile west of Callander there remains of a fortification on the top of a hill called Dun bo chaistel, the hill of the Castle. This must have been a place of considerable strength; The face of the hill is perpendicular rising to the height of about ? and quite inaccessible on the south. The Gateway and three tiers of ditches and mounds are distinct upon the top. The mounds are strengthened with large stones, and within was a sunk well, which has been filled up as cattle were liable to fall into it. In the plain of Bochastle and in the immediate vicinity of this fortification, is an Artificial bank of earth and stone, which perhaps was erected for the purpose of reducing this fort, but we have no authentic record on this subject."

the name Dun bo chaistel.
"The remains of this Camp may still
be seen, near Bochastle, about 15 miles
West, South-West from the Station at Ardoch.
The judicious position of the Camp, is very
apparent; as it guarded, at once, two
important passes into the West Country &c"

A small circular and apparently artificial mound on the banks of the Teith, close to the bridge. It is supposed to have been erected by the Romans, but tradition gives no information respecting it. There is a beautiful circular mount adjoining the church-yard of Callander, called Tom ma Chessaig, the hill of St. Kessaig who was the tutelar saint of this place. A market is still held here annually, in the month of March, which goes by the name of Feill ma chessaig, i.e. the festival of St. Kessaig."
Extract from Statistical Account.
"St. Mackessoge, or Kessoge. C. [Confessor]. Bishop in the provinces of Levin and Boin in Scotland". - "This saint was illustrious for his miracles, and died in 560. A celebrated church in that country still bears the title of St. Kessoge Kirk. The Scots for their cry in battle for some used his name, but afterward changed it for that of St. Andrew." 124 |
There is a remarkable object, situated at the east end of the Village of Callander, and on the north bank of the River Teith. It consists of a bank of earth, of considerable length, and in some parts sloping gently, on either side, from the summit. It is supposed by some, that the Romans encamped in the enclosure between the bank and the river. Others again, maintain that this feature was caused by the river having altered its course - which indeed seems to be the correct hypothesis. |

[Below Roman Camp:]

Note.
This consists of an extensive and very irregularly shaped
bank, about 12 feet high, a chain broad at the base and half
a chain at the top. Although it is considered by the vulgar
as a Roman Camp there is not the least evidence to
support the assumption, and the intelligent people of the neighbourhood
discard it. It is not noticed in Roy's Roman Antiquities, not does it bear
the usual shape of Roman Camps; and as the ground is perfectly level on each side there would
be no reason for the Romans, if they erected it, departing from their usual rectangular camps; besides
there is no place in the neighbourhood showing sufficient traces of an excavation to support the theory
of it being an artificial fortification, Roman or Pictish. J. B. Hamilton Esqr. of Leny states that, from excavations
made in it, it is found to be a bank of gravel, such as might have been found in past times
by the motion of the adjoining river and this seems to be the proper conclusion to arrive at respecting it.
