063 A small but neat cottage with garden attached the property of Mr Soutar Banker Blairgowrie.
Close behind this house is the site of what is said to have been a very large cairn which was removed many years ago in excavating the foundation of the cottage some 40 years since a human skull was found inclosed within a stone cist, & a few years later Mr. Soutar found in his garden, a Roman coin of the Emperor Hadrian.
"Following the road leading to Dunkeld, which diverges from the Perth Road a little to the westward of the Village, we must ask the reader to pause with us for a moment, at the first habitation by the wayside, a neat cottage belonging to Mr. Soutar, an old school fellow of ours some 2 score years ago. Mark we pray you that uninteresting looking heap of stones on the right hand, nearly opposite to the cottage gate. Reader, in that same heap of stones you see the remains of an ancient aboriginal Cairn, filled up perhaps 1700 years ago, over the bloody graves of brave men who here fought and died in the cause of freedom contending against the conquerors of the world. Many local names and unvarying traditions concur in pointing out this entire district as the theatre of extensive military operations at some remote period; and to some of these circumstances we shall have occasion to direct the readers attention by and by. ( See Kinloch Ph. [Parish]) The cairn in question was originally, even within our own recollection, of a large extent, covering a considerable space of ground on both sides of the present road including the site of the cottage and offices. But the improver has been here; a few a few years ago the last remnant of the Cairn was trenched to make way for the plough, and when that heap of stones is removed, nothing will serve to mark the spot where once it was. In excavating the foundation of the Cottage, some 20 years since, a human skull was found enclosed within 4 large flat stones, & a few years ago our friend Mr. Soutar found in his garden, a Roman coin of the Emperor Hadrian, which we have seen. It is of bronze or some composite metal, and is in excellent preservation, having a fine profile of the Emperor on one side, with the inscription "Hadrianus Aug. [Augustus]". And on the reverse a figure of justice, with some illegible hieroglyphics". Perthshire Constitutional September 30th 1840
