018 | [Situation] About 7½ Miles from Peebles towards Selkirk A hamlet consisting of 14 slated Cottages with gardens attached, and occupied by Labrours [Labourers] employed by Lord Traquair & his tenant Robert Gardner Traquair Knowe. - There is an indifferent public house. One Cottage is held on an unexpired long lease. - In ancient times the Village appears to have been much more populous - June 1334 David II granted the Hostilarie of Traquair to Richard Halywell on its forfeiture by John Craig. - The same Monarch granted to Roger Wodyfield twenty librates of land with a burgage in the town of Traquair!! - Chalmers says that of old there was a considerable Village, which had arisen under the shelter of the Royal Castle (Robertson's Index). - |
