An ancient Mansion which stands on the right bank of the Tweed opposite the Village of Inverleithen at the confluence of the Quair and Tweed. -
Said to have formerly been a hunting seat of the Kings of Scotland & from which Charters are dated by Malcolm IV; - William the Lyon; & Alexander II & III - The modern part was built by the Earl of Traquair, Lord Treasurer in the reign of Chas [Charles] 11. The House or Castle & the lands were anciently possessed by the Murrays from whom they passed by forfeiture to the Douglas & in 1478 were granted to Stewart Earl of Buchan from whom the present Noble owner is desended; (Chalmers Caledonia). - Traquair House & some of the contiguous lands are in the occupation of the proprietor, the Earl of Traquair. -
