An ancient baronial stronghold Situated in a rocky Eminence on the north bank of the River Tweed, about a mile west from the town of Peebles. It originally consisted of a tall border tower of Peel of unknown antiquity to which a Strong addition was made (as is Supposed) in the earlier part of the fifteenth Century, So that it now presents the appearance of a comparatively modern edifice with the ruin of the ancient building attached that being in a State of [Continued on page 30] |

state of utter decay. This ruinous Condition is Chiefly to be attributed to Cromwell who besieged it in 1650, it being then fortified by Lord Yester. Tradition Says the Protector's artillery was stationed on the eminence on the opposite bank of the river. Now Known as "South Park Wood" but no remains of works Exist to Attest this. Both portions of the Castle Are of great Strength, the walls in Some places being eleven feet thick, the modern portion is quite Enti [entire] And is occupied by the Gamekeeper of the estate. The entrance to the Courtyard fronting the Castle is by An Archway on which are the bearings of the family of Fras [Fraser] founders of the house of Tweeddale - a goat's head over a coronet: and in the drop beneath, a bunch of Strawberries. In the Courtyard are the ruins of out-houses all of which have been of a much later date than the Castle itself Fronting the River are Several terraces which formed part of the Castle garden The history of Nidpath is identical with that of the house of Tweeddale And dates from the victory Sir Simon Fraser obtained over the English in 1303 at Roslin. In 1686 it became the property of the Duke of Queens [Queensberry] And Subsequently it passed, by marriage, into the Wemyss family, to whom it now belongs |

"The castle of Neidpath has been so often described of late that a very
short notice of it may suffice. It is a large square building more distinguished
for massive strength than architectural beauty. It was built and long
possessed by the powerful family of Frazer and by the marriage of the heiress
of that house passed along with the hereditary Sheriffship of the county
into the family of the Hays of Gifford the ancestor of the present Marquiss of Tweed-dale.
In 1686 the second Earl of Tweeddale sold his estates in Peeblesshire to the
first Duke of Queensberry who settled them on his second [son] the Earl of March
who on the abolition of heritable jurisdiction in 1747 claimed £4000 for
the Sheriffship of Peebles and was allowed £3418.4.5 for that office and the
regality of Newlands." -- New Stat. Acct. [New Statistical Account] of Peeblesshire page 9.
"Of these the castle of Neidpath not far from the old town of Peebles and in
the line of its principal Street is the Strongest one in the best preservation
its walls are 11 feet in thickness and
cemented with lime almost as hard as strong whin stone of which they are built.
It was anciently the property and chief residence of the powerful family of the Frazers
first proprietors of Oliver Castle and afterwards of a great part of the lands from
that to Peebles and Sheriffs of the County and from whom Spring the families of
Lovat and Saltoun in the N. [North] The last of that family in the male line in Tweeddale
was the brave Sir Simon Fraser who in 1303 along with Sir John Cummin,
with only 10,000 repulsed and defeated 30,000 English in three battles |

fought on one day on Roslin Moor. He left two daughters co-heiresses to his
great estate; one of whom was married to the ancestor of the Marquis of Tweeddale
and the other to the ancestor of the Earl of Wigton which families therefore
quartered the arms of the Frasers with their own. And the castle and large
barony of Neidpath continuing the property of the Tweeddale family and the
town of Peebles much under its Patronage the Frasers arms are to be seen on
the cross to this day." -- Old Stat. Acct. [Old Statistical Account] of Peeblesshire pages 11, &, 12.
"Neidpath is said of old to have had the name of the castle of Peebles. It was a
Strong Stately pile built upon a rock on the left bank of the Tweed (which flows
here through a deep and narrow glen) not far to the west of the old town of Peebles
and in a line with its chief street. Its walls measure eleven feet in thickness." -- Origines Parochiales Scotiae Vol [volume] 1 page 238. |

[Situation] Near the gate of Kerfield
A large boulder stone built into the wall near Kerfield gate. It is a well known object being a common rendezvous for the young people of the district and is as a trysting place for lovers; but it does not appear to possess any antiquarian interest, as nothing , either written or traditional exists regarding it. This stone was formerly situated on a small Knoll close to it's present position |

[Note] -- "It is a quartz boulder which has probably been
transported from the Highlands by an iceberg
and dropped in that spot. I never heard of
it by any other name than as the "White Stone",
nor was any historic legend of fact connected with
it as far as I Know" -- (Signed ) R Chambers |
